Travel And Cast Of Characters

As I write this, we are sitting at the Denver Airport, hoping that we will soon be boarding a flight to Orlando. Last week, the airport was literally closed for 2 and a half days by a winter storm. Today, there is a warning about another storm, to become heavy in the late afternoon. As we look out the terminal window, a light snow is falling. We are hoping that our 5 p.m. flight gets out before the real storm gets in.

If we take off, then we are going to be in WDW for 7 days. This is actually a little shorter than the trips we normally take, which tend to be 9 or 10 days. But, we are going to pack as much fun as we can into this week.

This week is designed to straddle New Years Eve. We will be there 3 days before New Years, and four days after. This will give us a chance to soak up all of the extra special holiday magic, having still spent our Christmas at home. Plus, being at WDW at midnight on New Years Eve is very special.
Because prices are high during the last week of the year, we are not using our DVC points for this part of the stay (it would be an outrageous number of points). Instead, we are staying at a budget resort (Pop Century was the only one we could book) the first three days, followed by four days at the Boardwalk when the points go down. We are excited about both, we have not stayed at either. We have always wanted to stay at the Boardwalk, ever since we bought DVC. But, we have never been able to swing a booking until this year.
Tonight we are actually staying at the Hyatt Regency at the Orlando Airport, then the fun starts tomorrow. This little trick costs money, but does not have us spending for an onsite resort and park passes for what will always be only a fraction of a day.
So, the cast of characters is as follows: I (Joe) am the Disney fanatic, especially when it comes to WDW. I plan these trips months in advance, and sort through our photos and polish the trip reports for what seems like months afterwards. Planning is half the fun. Remembering is the other half. The actual vacation is the other half. Wait, that doesnt seem right.
My wife, Debbie, and I are in our late forties this trip, and we may not be up for the commando touring that I really used to love. But, we will see if the energy of the place does not infuse us when we get there. Debbie pretends to be less interested in these trips than I, but she secretly loves them.
Then there is Nick, who is 14 this trip. Despite periods of surly teenage cynicism, he remains excited about WDW, and we look forward to sharing his changing view of the world. I always say that is the great thing about going with your kids, their experience changes every time.
So, here we go! Heres hoping for clear skies--or at least clear runways.

Got out of Denver, but 2 hours late. Rumor was they stopped flights after ours, but found out there was 20% running on Friday. In Orlando at 12:30, in room after 1:00 a.m. Nice room, xmas decorations in airport, big tree Hyatt courtyard. Too tired for room service or pictures, Restaurant closed. Straight to bed.
